Google+ is a truly powerful communications tool.
Used well, it can be used to rally huge sums of people around a cause.
If you’re successful, you can get the attention of just about anyone….even William Shatner.
All it takes quite is a bit of planning, coordination and the help of a team to get the ball rolling.
Around about two years ago myself and the team on Google+ embarked on a fun campaign to celebrate Richard Wooding‘s birthday.
If you would like to check his blog for full details on #WilliamShatnerWednesday as well, you’ll see the scope of it a little more.
Having spent months in Hangouts with Richard while Star Trek played in the background, I realized that it would be a dream for him to meet William Shatner in a Google+ Hangout.
And of course, I have been know to geek out with Star Trek too; yes, that is me on the left with the Enterprise poised in my hands!

What is all this I’m hearing about #WilliamShatnerWednesday ? I’m flattered. MBB
(MBB is My Best, Bill, btw!)
Then, after a lot more effort (A LOT) to keep engagement moving along Bill posted again:
William Shatner 1:59 AM – Public
I want to thank all of you for the absolutely wonderful surprise of #williamshatnerwednesday and the accompanying trending topic. As I pledged before at 1.5 Million I will do a hangout with 10 circlers from amongst all that have circled me. In the meantime I understand that +Richard Wooding started this William Shatner Wednesday idea so I have circled him as a thank you. My best to all of you, Bill
Well, I have to admit, this took a bit of planning and a huge amount of effort from many people.
So, how did we got it all rolling?
Well, we brought out the big guns (well, phasers) on ‘attention grabbing’ and created a ‘trend’ topic just for Bill.
This is a serious way to grab someone’s attention! (Used with caution and positive vibes.)
As you probably have heard me say, Google+ is about: Connecting, Engaging and Relating. The better you do all 3 of these, the more likely you will gain and sustain someone’s attention. So that is what we do, post after post, with a tremendous amount of creativity along the way.
As always, they are all a very interesting experiment and was a lot of fun as well!
There have been many great people involved, and it wouldn’t have come together without every single one.
This is always the same. You will not be able to ‘do this’ on your own, you will need to build a community, or a micro-community for a specific campaign, in order for it to fly.
So, all in all, we were so pleased to see +William Shatner (yes, his agency but still counts…) interacting on Google+ and we hope he is pleased of his trending position between Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry.
We created a “Shatner Sandwich!”
(You can see this was the original ‘report’ I did back to the community.)
So, seeing as I’ve been rolling with #williamshatnerwedensday as well as #starwarstuesday (for the past 2 years),
I thought I would link you to one of my favourite clips of the great man doing an awesome tribute to George Lucas, singing ‘My Way’

At Plus Your Business we are committed to pushing the boundaries as to what you can do with Google+.
The final frontier (yes, I know…) is always to move forward with the community as part of the crew, reporting back on what we learn.
There will be more campaigns in the future, so watch this space for upcoming episodes (yes, I know on that one too…)
