DREAM STATE — REM NEURAL FIRING PATTERN

DREAM STATE — REM NEURAL FIRING PATTERN

DREAM STATE — REM NEURAL FIRING PATTERN

VISUAL STYLE: The dreaming brain made visible — REM sleep neural activity rendered as luminous firing patterns. Rapid eye movement sleep is neurologically almost indistinguishable from waking, but the patterns of activation are different: more random, more associative, more visually generative. This is what the brain looks like when it creates worlds.

COLOUR PALETTE: Deep black — not the black of sleep but the black of a darkroom where something is being developed. Against it: neural firing in warm bioluminescent amber and gold for the primary visual cortex, which is extraordinarily active during dreaming. Hot magenta for the limbic system — emotion firing without the prefrontal brake. Electric blue for the hippocampus — memory replaying and recombining. Pale silver-white for the brainstem — the REM generator, the source of the dreaming state itself. All colours appear as brief bright flashes — the pointillist language of neural firing.

FIRING PATTERNS: Individual neurons fire as single bright points of light — brief, precise, intense. Clusters fire in sequence — a wave of activation spreading through a neural ensemble. The pattern is not random but it is not orderly — it is associative, following pathways of meaning rather than logic.

VISUAL CORTEX ACTIVATION: The visual cortex generates imagery without input — its activation during REM produces the visual content of dreams. This is shown as complex, shifting activation patterns that suggest imagery without depicting it — the neural substrate of vision without the vision itself.

CONNECTIVITY: Long-range connections between distant brain regions activate during REM — the default mode network running without supervision. These long connections are shown as slow, graceful arcs of light between bright activation clusters.

MOVEMENT: The firing patterns shift and reorganise continuously. A cluster of activity builds, reaches a peak, then disperses as the dream narrative shifts. The whole system breathes with the rhythm of the dreaming mind.

No photographs. No dream imagery. No real people. Pure neural firing, pure REM activation, pure dreaming brain throughout.
