LIQUID CRYSTAL — IRIDESCENT SURFACE PHYSICS

VISUAL STYLE: Liquid crystal physics made visible — the optical phenomena of thin film interference, iridescence, and polarised light. The colours of a soap bubble. The surface of a beetle's wing. The shimmer of a CD held to the light. Physics producing beauty without intention.

COLOUR PALETTE: Every colour simultaneously, but never all at once. Iridescence shifts — what is magenta from one angle is teal from another. The palette moves through the full spectrum continuously: deep violet bleeding into electric blue, tipping into cyan, warming through green-gold, flaring into magenta, returning to violet. No colour is fixed. All colour is interference.

SURFACE: Smooth, highly reflective, slightly curved. The surface itself is almost colourless — a transparent medium. The colour exists only in the interaction between light waves reflecting from its two faces. Ripples in the surface shift the interference pattern and the colour changes in waves.

LIGHT PHYSICS: Thin film interference is the mechanism — light reflecting from the top and bottom surfaces of an ultra-thin layer, with wavelengths reinforcing or cancelling each other depending on the layer thickness. The visual result is colour that moves, shifts, and cannot be pinned down.

MOVEMENT: Ripples cross the surface and colour moves with them. A gentle wave produces a travelling band of shifting spectrum. Multiple ripples produce complex overlapping colour interference.

SCALE: Could be a soap bubble at 10cm or a cosmic phenomenon at planetary scale. The physics is scale-independent. The beauty works at any size.
