MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMICS — CONDUCTING FLUID IN FIELD
VISUAL STYLE: Magnetohydrodynamics made visible — the behaviour of electrically conducting fluid (liquid metal, plasma, the Earth's outer core) in a magnetic field. Fluid that carries current. Fields that shape flow. Flow that generates fields. The physics of the Earth's magnetic dynamo, of liquid metal reactors, of stellar interiors — rendered as luminous flowing form.
COLOUR PALETTE: Deep black as the ground. The conducting fluid in vivid liquid metal tones — shifting mercury-silver when calm, brightening to electric gold where current density is highest. Magnetic field lines in pure electric blue — precise geometric arcs that constrain and channel the fluid flow. Where fluid crosses field lines, electric violet flashes — the induced current made visible. Where field lines are compressed by fluid flow, they brighten to white. The overall palette: silver-gold fluid on black, constrained by blue field geometry, with violet current events.
THE FLUID: Unlike ordinary fluid, conducting fluid cannot move freely across magnetic field lines — it is pinned to them, or must drag them along. This fundamental constraint produces the characteristic MHD motion: fluid flowing along field lines freely, but resisted when moving perpendicular to them.
ALFVÉN WAVES: The signature oscillation of MHD — waves that travel along magnetic field lines at the Alfvén speed. Shown as rhythmic, transverse oscillations of the field lines themselves, propagating from disturbance to disturbance through the magnetised fluid.
THE DYNAMO: The self-sustaining cycle — fluid motion generates magnetic field, magnetic field shapes fluid motion. Shown as a reinforcing spiral: a rising plume of conducting fluid stretches and twists a field line, inducing current, strengthening the field, which then channels the next plume.
MOVEMENT: The fluid flows with the complex, constrained beauty of MHD — free along field lines, resisted across them. The field lines flex and snap back. Alfvén waves propagate continuously.
No photographs. No physical apparatus or hardware. No real people. Pure MHD physics, pure conducting fluid, pure electromagnetic constraint throughout.
