TURBULENCE — REYNOLDS NUMBER TRANSITION
VISUAL STYLE: The transition from laminar to turbulent flow — one of the most beautiful and least understood phenomena in physics. Fluid moving in smooth, parallel layers suddenly becoming chaotic, unpredictable, filled with vortices within vortices at every scale. The moment order becomes complexity. Leonardo da Vinci drew it obsessively. This is why.
COLOUR PALETTE: Laminar flow in deep, calm electric blue — smooth, parallel, ordered. The transition zone where laminar breaks down: blue brightening to vivid cyan, then green, then gold as energy cascades from large vortices to small ones. Fully turbulent flow in a complex, luminous mix of the entire warm spectrum — orange, red, gold — chaotic but energy-rich. The colour tells the story of the Reynolds number — low Reynolds (blue, calm) to high Reynolds (warm, chaotic).
LAMINAR ZONE: The entry condition — flow lines perfectly parallel, undisturbed. Beautiful in their order. The fluid moves as if in layers, each layer sliding smoothly over the one beside it with no mixing.
THE TRANSITION: The critical moment — a tiny perturbation grows. A single wavy instability appears in one flow line, amplifies, rolls into a vortex, which spawns smaller vortices, which spawn smaller ones still. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability made visible — the rolling wave pattern at the boundary between two flow speeds.
ENERGY CASCADE: The defining feature of turbulence — energy injected at large scales cascades to smaller and smaller vortices until it reaches molecular scales and dissipates as heat. This cascade is shown as colour shifting from large, bright, warm vortices through successively smaller, cooler, dimmer ones.
MOVEMENT: The laminar zone is still and ordered. The transition zone oscillates with growing amplitude. The turbulent zone is in constant, complex, beautiful motion at every scale.
No photographs. No physical apparatus. No real people. Pure fluid physics, pure Reynolds transition, pure turbulent cascade throughout.
